British Museum Implements Photography Ban on Bayeux Tapestry

The British Museum has prohibited visitors from taking photographs of the Bayeux Tapestry. Museum officials stated that the measure aims to address congestion caused by guests pausing to capture images of the historic artifact.

The Policy Change

The 68-meter medieval embroidery attracts significant crowds. Museum management reported that visitors stopping to photograph the tapestry were obstructing the flow of foot traffic. This behavior created bottlenecks, preventing other patrons from viewing the exhibit efficiently. Consequently, the institution decided to restrict photography to ensure a smoother experience for all attendees.

Current Status

The ban is now in effect for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibit. Visitors are no longer permitted to use cameras or mobile devices to document the embroidery while inside the gallery space.
