Egypt aims to secure $3 billion in new fertilizer investments to increase annual production by up to 3 million tonnes. The expansion involves five major projects currently under development, according to the Chemical and Fertilizers Export Council.
Development Phase
The projects involve a mix of local, Chinese, and Indian investors. These initiatives are designed to bolster the domestic fertilizer sector, which currently accounts for 7% of Egypt’s non-oil exports. The industry produces phosphate, nitrogen, and potash fertilizers for both local use and international markets.
Production Timeline
The additional output is expected to materialize over the next three years. Initial production will prioritize domestic agricultural needs to support national food security. Surplus supplies will subsequently be directed to export markets, where Egyptian fertilizers are already sold to over 100 countries.
Current Status
The fertilizer sector remains a strategic priority for Egypt. Officials expect the increased capacity to support the national goal of reaching $100 billion in total exports by 2030.
