Indonesia records over 170,000 haze-related respiratory cases, many among children

Health officials in Indonesia have confirmed more than 170,000 respiratory illnesses linked to the ongoing haze, with over 40,000 cases involving children under five.

Reported figures

The Ministry of Health said the tally includes conditions ranging from mild coughs to severe pneumonia. Children account for roughly a quarter of the total cases, according to the agency’s latest bulletin.

Underlying factors

Authorities attribute the surge to dense smoke from forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, which has persisted for weeks. The particulate matter, measured at hazardous levels, aggravates existing lung conditions and triggers new infections, especially in vulnerable groups such as toddlers and the elderly.

Local hospitals report increased admissions to pediatric wards, while clinics in affected provinces are seeing higher outpatient visits for respiratory complaints.

Future monitoring

Health officials plan to expand air‑quality monitoring stations and issue daily advisories. The government has also pledged to coordinate with neighboring countries to address the source of the fires. Observers will watch for changes in pollution levels and any further spikes in hospitalizations as the haze season progresses.
