Egypt Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Security and Trade at UN Assembly

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held high-level meetings in New York to address regional security, nuclear non-proliferation, and bilateral economic ties. The discussions occurred alongside the 81st UN General Assembly.

14-18 September

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held its 70th General Conference in Vienna. Following this event, Abdelatty met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to review outcomes and discuss technical cooperation regarding peaceful nuclear energy usage.

22 September

Abdelatty met with Grossi and UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell. With Grossi, the minister emphasized diplomatic solutions to contain escalation regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He also advocated for universal adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in the Middle East. In separate talks with Powell, Abdelatty requested increased British investment in Egypt and improved access for Egyptian exports to the UK market. The two officials also reviewed regional conflicts, including the situation in Sudan and maritime security.

Current Status

Egypt continues to push for diplomatic resolutions to regional crises while seeking to expand trade and investment partnerships with the United Kingdom.
