The Egyptian government has launched a renovation project on Ibrahim Pasha Street in Heliopolis, a historic Cairo district. The initiative focuses on restoring 13 buildings and 64 shop façades, while upgrading telecommunications and infrastructure along a 250-metre stretch. Officials state the project aims to standardize commercial signage and conceal utility units.
The Facts
The Ministry of Local Development reports that it consulted with local residents and business owners prior to the project’s commencement. The intervention involves pedestrianizing the street and reorganizing commercial spaces. Heliopolis, established in 1906 by the Heliopolis Oasis Company, was originally designed as an integrated settlement featuring Persian, Moorish, and European architectural influences. The district’s layout was historically centered around a tramway system that connected the suburb to central Cairo.
