Unilever opened its 13th production line at the Mashreq personal‑care factory in 6th of October City, raising the plant’s annual output by about 20%, the minister of industry said on Thursday.
Details of the expansion
The new line was inaugurated by Industry Minister Khaled Hashem as Unilever marked two decades at the site. The 22,000‑square‑metre complex, with 13,000 sq m of built‑up area, already sends roughly 65% of its output to more than 30 export markets. The added capacity will be allocated entirely to those markets.
About 80% of the raw materials used at the plant are sourced locally, linking the export surge to Egypt’s domestic supply chain. The factory produces personal‑care, beauty and home‑care items.
Analysis of the move
Hashem highlighted Unilever as a key partner in Egypt’s industrial strategy, citing the country’s location, trade agreements, skilled labour and infrastructure. The expansion aligns with government goals to deepen manufacturing, raise exports and integrate into global supply chains. Unilever’s sustainability steps, such as water recycling and recycled‑plastic packaging, were also noted as consistent with ministry priorities.
The minister said competition among multinational subsidiaries and the ability of local teams to deliver competitive returns influence future investment decisions.
