Met Museum Opens “Past Continuous” Show Highlighting Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock

New York (Reuters) – The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened “Past Continuous,” a exhibition that juxtaposes the works of abstract expressionists Lee Krasner and her husband Jackson Pollock. The show, which opened on September 25, features about 120 paintings, drawings and paper pieces from both artists.

The curators designed the layout to trace the artistic dialogue between Krasner and Pollock, emphasizing how their styles intersected and diverged over three decades. Visitors can see early works by Krasner alongside Pollock’s iconic drip paintings, as well as later pieces that reflect mutual influence.

Key Highlights

Among the displayed items are Krasner’s 1945 “The Seasons” and Pollock’s 1950 “Number 31,” both rarely exhibited together. The museum also includes previously unseen sketches and archival photographs that document the couple’s studio life.

Context

Krasner, long recognized for her own contributions to abstract expressionism, has often been eclipsed by Pollock’s fame. The exhibition aims to reassess her legacy by presenting her work on equal footing with his.

Met director Max Hollein said the show offers “a fresh look at two of the 20th century’s most influential artists and the personal bond that shaped their creative output.” The museum plans related talks and a catalogue release later this year.

The exhibition will run through January 12, 2027, after which several works will travel to other institutions.
