Italian Carabinieri detained two teenagers in Friuli after they stole a vehicle and posted a video of the act on social media to show off to friends.
The police said the youths entered the car without permission, drove it for a short distance, and recorded the episode before being stopped by law enforcement near the town of Udine.
Authorities recovered the vehicle and the video, which was uploaded to a popular platform and quickly shared among the perpetrators’ contacts. The Carabinieri identified the suspects through the online post and traced the car’s location using surveillance footage.
Investigation and Charges
Investigators charged the minors with theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and violation of privacy laws for publishing the footage. The Carabinieri emphasized that posting such content can accelerate arrests, as digital footprints are easily tracked.
Legal Context
Under Italian law, theft of a motor vehicle carries a prison term of up to six years, while distributing illicit recordings may result in additional penalties. The suspects are being held pending a hearing with a juvenile court.
The case highlights growing concerns among Italian authorities about young people using social media to flaunt criminal behavior, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and education on digital responsibility.
