A collective exhibition titled “Locandiera” opened on Oct. 3 at the museum in Cotignola, Ravenna province, showcasing the region’s historic osterie and balere.
Exhibition Details
The show brings together artifacts, photographs and multimedia displays that trace the evolution of Romagna’s taverns and dance halls from the early 20th century to today. Curators selected items from private collections and local archives to illustrate how these social spaces shaped community life.
Context and Stakeholders
Museum director Luca Bianchi said the project aims to preserve cultural memory while engaging younger audiences. Local historians and former proprietors contributed oral histories, highlighting the role of osterie as meeting points for workers and balere as venues for traditional music. The municipality of Cotignola provided funding and promotional support.
Outlook
The exhibition will run through March 2025 and include guided tours, workshops on traditional cuisine and dance demonstrations. Organizers hope the program will spur interest in heritage tourism and encourage restoration of surviving osterie and balere across the Romagna region.
