Caught in a Scam: The Fake Parking Ticket Trap

Living in Rome can be confusing, and sometimes, things aren’t what they seem. I learned that the hard way recently with a parking ticket nightmare.

  1. I had been skipping parking fees for months because, honestly, nobody checks.
  2. Suddenly, I found three tickets on my windshield in one week.
  3. Following advice, I scanned the QR code on the tickets to pay them quickly at the post office to avoid extra fees.
  4. Later, news broke that a criminal gang was placing fake tickets on cars, complete with their own payment codes.
  5. I checked my tickets and realized I had been scammed by thieves doing the police’s job for them.

It turns out I was the target of a clever con, proving that in a chaotic city, even your fines might be fake.
