Spain’s Second Division Is More Competitive Than Ever

The landscape of Spanish football is shifting, and the Segunda División—now known as LaLiga Hypermotion—is proving it’s no longer just a stepping stone. For the first time in history, 16 of the league’s 22 teams have previously competed in the top flight. Historic clubs with rich pasts, like the famous “Queso Mecánico” Albacete or the Tenerife sides once managed by Jorge Valdano, are fighting alongside modern success stories to reclaim their place among the elite.

This surge in quality is impossible to ignore. Beyond the historic pedigree of the clubs, the level of talent on the pitch is rising rapidly. During the last World Cup, five players from the second tier represented their national teams, a clear jump from the three who participated just four years prior.
