Lufthansa Outbids Air France-KLM for Stake in Portugal’s TAP

Lufthansa announced a €1 billion offer for a 44.9% stake in Portugal’s state‑owned airline TAP, beating rival Air France‑KLM. The German carrier said the bid could rise to €1.2 billion for up to 49.9% ownership.

The proposal, disclosed on Wednesday, reflects Lufthansa’s desire to secure a foothold in the transatlantic market as merger targets in Europe dwindle. TAP, one of the few independent flag carriers left on the continent, remains under government control.

Lufthansa’s move aims to prevent a “fear of missing out” on lucrative routes and to strengthen its network against competitors. The deal, if approved, would give the airline access to TAP’s slots and customer base, potentially reshaping European airline alliances. #Aviation #Lufthansa #TAP @Lufthansa @TAPAirPortugal
