Portia Prebys, the longtime partner of Italian author Giorgio Bassani and a dedicated curator of his literary estate, has died. Her passing marks the loss of a key figure in the preservation of 20th-century Italian literature.
Prebys is credited with the donation that established the Centro Studi Bassaniani in Ferrara. The facility serves as a research center dedicated to the study and promotion of Bassani’s work, including his most famous novel, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. Through her efforts, Bassani’s archives and personal collection were secured for public scholarship and exhibition. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.
