Tokyo has formally asked the European Union to adopt equitable conditions for the import of electric cars, a move aimed at preventing Japanese manufacturers from being sidelined in the bloc’s emerging market.
A government spokesperson said Japan is monitoring the EU’s regulatory framework and expressed worry that current proposals could effectively exclude Japanese EV models. The request seeks transparency in tariff schedules, certification processes and subsidies that could favor EU or other non‑Japanese producers.
Japanese officials indicated they will engage with EU policymakers to ensure that any standards or incentives are applied without discrimination. The dialogue comes as the EU accelerates its green transition and revises automotive regulations.
