Criminale novel turned into opera premieres at Teatro del Maggio

Italian composer Luca Piatti’s new opera based on Giancarlo De Cataldo’s novel “Romanzo criminale” debuted on 23 October at Rome’s Teatro del Maggio. The production, directed by Marco Popolizio, marks the first stage adaptation of the crime saga.

Piatti conducted the opening performance from the podium, while De Cataldo described the staging as “a dream come true.” The work blends contemporary music with the novel’s gritty narrative, aiming to attract both opera audiences and fans of the original book.
