Spain’s Electric Vehicle Subsidy Program Faces Uncertainty Over Upcoming Elections

Spain’s automotive sector is approaching pre-pandemic sales volumes, with projections reaching up to 1.3 million units annually. This recovery is driven by an increase in competitive pricing from Chinese manufacturers and rising consumer demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Industry analysts attribute this growth largely to government incentive programs that lower the purchase price for consumers.

However, uncertainty surrounds the future of these subsidies as the current Auto+ program, managed by the Ministry of Industry, is set to expire on December 31. Data shows that 71 percent of the available 400 million euro budget has already been exhausted. With general elections approaching in just over a month, manufacturers fear a potential disruption in funding, as no immediate plans for a successor program have been announced.
