Chilean Commission Rejects Acciona Offshore Wind Project

A regional commission in Chile has rejected a major offshore wind energy project proposed by the Spanish company Acciona. The Coastal Marine Zoning Regional Commission (CRUBC) voted unanimously against the Lile project, which was planned for the coast near Valparaíso. The decision blocks the development of 66 floating wind turbines designed to generate 1,100 megawatts of electricity.

Acciona holds an 80% stake in Lile SpA, the entity behind the proposal. The company had estimated an investment of $2.6 billion for the infrastructure. The rejection represents a significant setback for the firm’s broader strategy to expand its wind energy portfolio in the region. The company has not yet announced its next steps regarding the regulatory ruling.
