La Scala Opens Pina Bausch Exhibition Ahead of Spring Rite Debut

Visitors to Milan’s Teatro alla Scala this week found the historic auditorium transformed into a tribute to the late choreographer Pina Bausch. The exhibition, featuring photographs, costume sketches and video excerpts, occupies the foyer and several side galleries.

Exhibition timed with spring opera

The display was installed to coincide with the house’s new production of Igor Stravinsky’s “Le sacre du printemps,” which opens on 7 November. Opera director Marco Balich said the pairing highlights the shared emphasis on movement and visual storytelling in both ballet and opera.

Curator Elena Rossi explained that the exhibit traces Bausch’s career from her early work with Tanztheater Wuppertal to her later collaborations with international dance companies. Panels include rare photographs of rehearsals and costume designs that illustrate her innovative approach to space and emotion.

Audience reaction and future plans

Attendees described the exhibition as “immersive” and “a fitting prelude” to the upcoming performance. Cultural commentator Giulia Conti noted that the show offers Milan audiences a chance to engage with contemporary dance history before seeing a classic modernist score interpreted on stage.

La Scala plans to keep the exhibition open for the duration of the opera run, which is scheduled to conclude in late December. The theater’s management hopes the initiative will attract a broader public to both the visual and performing arts.

Why it matters: The exhibition introduces Pina Bausch’s pioneering work to Italian audiences at a landmark cultural venue, linking her legacy to a major operatic event. It underscores the cross‑disciplinary dialogue between dance and opera, offering insight into modern performance trends that resonate across the Middle East and Egypt’s growing interest in contemporary arts.
