Orange Secures Majority of Spain’s Rural 5G Deployment Grants

Spain’s Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function has announced the provisional allocation of grants for the first phase of its 5G network expansion program in rural areas. The initiative aims to improve connectivity in underserved regions through competitive bidding.

October 23, 2024

The Ministry issued a resolution detailing the distribution of funds for the program, titled 5G Redes muy rurales. According to the document, Orange España is the primary recipient, set to receive 12.24 million euros. This amount accounts for 70.14 percent of the total 17.45 million euros in public subsidies available.

Provisional Adjudication

Telefónica Móviles España was the only other company to submit a proposal for this competitive process. The firm is slated to receive 5.21 million euros, representing 29.86 percent of the total funding allocated. These figures remain provisional pending final confirmation from the Ministry.

Current Status

The government’s selection process concludes this phase with Orange and Telefónica as the sole participants. The funding is intended to accelerate the deployment of high-speed mobile infrastructure across rural Spanish territories, bridging the digital divide between urban and remote populations.

Why it matters: This allocation represents a significant step in Spain’s national strategy to modernize digital infrastructure. For telecommunications stakeholders and regional authorities, the funding dictates which operators will control network capacity in rural markets, directly impacting service quality for residents in less populated areas.
