Egypt and EU Discuss New Investment Agreement to Strengthen Trade Ties

The European Union is engaged in discussions with Egypt regarding a Sustainable Investment Facility Agreement (SIFA) aimed at bolstering trade and investment, EU Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst announced. The proposal was detailed during the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Economic Forum held in Cairo.

Eichhorst stated that while Egypt has made measurable progress in attracting European investors, significant obstacles remain. She identified persistent trade barriers and complex, multi-layered decision-making processes as primary challenges hindering deeper economic integration. The EU currently accounts for 42% of exports from the Mediterranean region to the bloc, a figure Eichhorst described as significant but insufficient.

Addressing Trade Imbalances and Regional Integration

During the forum, the ambassador acknowledged concerns from Egypt and other regional partners regarding existing imbalances in trade relations. To address these, the EU aims to increase investment in Mediterranean partners, intending to foster conditions that generate jobs and facilitate both exports and imports.

Eichhorst emphasized the necessity of regional integration, noting that the Mediterranean remains one of the least integrated regions globally regarding trade and investment. SIFAs are designed to address these issues by providing practical measures to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). These agreements focus on increasing the transparency of investment regulations and streamlining day-to-day administrative procedures.

Focusing on Private Investment and Youth

The ambassador also addressed the changing landscape of economic development, noting that public funding is in decline. She urged for greater participation from private investors and the creation of regulatory frameworks that improve conditions for populations across the region.

Eichhorst further highlighted the role of youth in economic development, particularly regarding small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. She called for an environment that supports these emerging businesses and ensures young people are involved in economic consultations.
