Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia Meet to Discuss Libya Political Settlement

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia convened in Algiers on Sunday to coordinate efforts aimed at reviving a United Nations-led political process in Libya. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty joined his Algerian and Tunisian counterparts to evaluate the current political and security landscape in the neighboring country.

Diplomatic Coordination on Libya

The tripartite mechanism serves as a platform for the three nations to align their strategies regarding the Libyan crisis. According to the participating ministers, the objective is to foster an inclusive political solution driven by Libyan stakeholders. The participants emphasized that any durable resolution must stem from domestic dialogue rather than external imposition.

The ministers outlined a framework for stabilization that includes the following goals:

  • Establishing a mechanism for dialogue among competing Libyan factions.
  • Organizing free and transparent legislative and presidential elections.
  • Creating unified state institutions capable of maintaining security.

On the sidelines of the summit, Minister Abdelatty scheduled bilateral meetings with Algerian officials to discuss regional cooperation. These discussions are part of a broader diplomatic push by the three countries to stabilize the North African region through increased consultation.

Why it matters:

Libya’s ongoing political instability directly impacts the national security and economic interests of its immediate neighbors, Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia. By pushing for unified institutions and national elections, these countries aim to mitigate the risk of cross-border security threats and foster a stable environment that can support regional trade and migration management.
