Alexia Putellas Receives Advice Letter from Former Spain Star Luis Suárez

Barcelona forward Alexia Putellas, the first woman to win the Ballon d’Or, said she received a personal letter from former Spain international Luis Suárez. The correspondence arrived after Putellas secured the award, which she earned on October 30, 2023.

In the letter, Suárez, the only Spanish-born player to win France Football’s Ballon d’Or in 1960, reflected on his own experience lifting the trophy and urged Putellas to view the honor as a stepping stone rather than an endpoint. He wrote, “This trophy should be the foundation of your departure, not your goal,” a sentiment Putellas said resonated with her ambition.

Putellas responded publicly, thanking Suárez for his words and acknowledging the impact of his advice on her future plans. She shared her gratitude on social media, noting that the message would stay with her as she continues her career with Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Background

The Ballon d’Or, awarded by France Football, has historically recognized the world’s best male players. Putellas’ victory marks a milestone as she becomes the first female recipient of the award, highlighting the growing recognition of women’s football. Luis Suárez, a former Barcelona and Inter Milan forward, won the award in 1960, a rare achievement for a Spanish-born player.

What Comes Next

Putellas indicated that she will use the accolade and Suárez’s counsel to drive her performance in upcoming club and international fixtures, including the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the next European Championship qualifiers. Suárez has not commented further on the exchange.

Why it matters: The exchange underscores the increasing visibility of women’s football in Spain and the Middle East, illustrating how historic male achievements can inspire and guide the next generation of female athletes.
