Indian internet company Info Edge has approved the sale of its full equity stakes in healthtech firm MedCords and employment platform Unnati Online. The company will divest its holdings for approximately ₹5,000 each, formalizing exits from investments that were previously fully impaired.
Fiscal Year 2020
Info Edge recorded a full impairment provision for its investment in Unnati Online during the 2020 fiscal year. The company had initially invested ₹4 crore in the Gurugram-based platform, which connects informal sector workers with employers, through convertible preference shares.
March 2020
The company committed to investing ₹7 crore in MedCords, a platform designed to connect patients, doctors, and pharmacies. This transaction brought Info Edge’s proposed aggregate shareholding to 16.89% on a fully diluted basis at that time.
Fiscal Year 2024
Info Edge booked provisions for the full impairment of its investment in MedCords. The company held a 14.18% stake in MedCords Healthcare Solutions and a 31.64% stake in Unnati Online through its subsidiary, Startup Investments (Holding) Limited.
January 27, 2027
The company expects to finalize both divestment transactions by this date. MedCords director Shreyans Mehta will acquire the healthtech stake, while Unnati Online directors Eral Ravi and Aashutosh Chaudhary will purchase the employment platform holdings. Upon completion, MedCords will no longer be a joint venture, and Unnati Online will cease to be an associate company.
Current Status
Following the divestments, Info Edge’s board approved an additional investment of up to ₹150 crore in its subsidiary, Redstart Labs. This capital will be deployed over the next 18 months for working capital and general corporate purposes.
Why it matters: This divestment marks a strategic withdrawal from two previously impaired startup assets. For investors, the move signals a cleanup of the company’s portfolio, allowing Info Edge to reallocate resources toward its deeptech investment arm, Redstart Labs, while shedding entities that no longer align with its current financial objectives.
