Microsoft Offers Voluntary Exit Program Amid AI Workforce Shifts

Kripa Venkatachalam, a vice president at Cadence Design Systems, describes her current role as having a “front-row seat” to the way semiconductor chips are designed in India. Over a career spanning two decades, including positions at Siemens EDA and Synopsys, she has navigated various workplace challenges. Venkatachalam now advocates for women to actively build a support system, or a “front row,” to help manage professional and personal demands.

Global Workforce Adjustments

As corporations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence, Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit program for eligible employees across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The initiative coincides with the company’s broader effort to reshape its workforce in response to heavy investments in AI technology.

Under the terms of the program, participating employees are offered a package that includes one month’s base salary for every year of completed service. The package also provides health insurance coverage and career transition services. While the company has approximately 23,000 employees in India, it has not disclosed how many staff members in the country are eligible for the offer. Globally, approximately 60,000 employees qualify for the program.

AI Expansion and Corporate Governance

In other industry developments, the Indian Ministry of Defence has entered a five-year agreement with the Bengaluru-based company Sarvam. The collaboration aims to develop artificial intelligence applications for the armed forces, focusing on training, operations, and decision-support systems. The agreement includes provisions for shared foundation models and geospatial perception systems.

Meanwhile, the Tata Group is navigating internal leadership disputes. Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, has challenged the resolution to reappoint N Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons. Noel Tata stated the reappointment was “void,” arguing the action was taken out of turn and was not listed on the meeting’s agenda.
