A free, public footbath has opened at the Museum of Narratives (MoN) in Tokyo, located within the Takanawa Gateway City development. The amenity is situated on the facility’s sixth-floor terrace and does not require an admission ticket to access.
March 2024
The Museum of Narratives opened its doors at Takanawa Gateway City, a new cultural and commercial district near Takanawa Gateway Station. The station is a stop on the Yamanote line, which services Tokyo’s city center.
The Ashiyu Terrace
Visitors can access the Ashiyu Terrace, an outdoor space located on the sixth floor of the museum complex. The terrace features an open-air footbath, which includes both warm and cold water sections. The area provides views of the surrounding cityscape and nearby train tracks, including the busy rail hub at Shinagawa Station.
Additional Amenities
Beyond the footbath, the museum grounds offer other free-to-access areas. A small Shinto shrine is located on the rooftop. Additionally, a fourth-floor relaxation room features tatami flooring and digital art displays.
Current Status
The Ashiyu Terrace and surrounding free amenities remain open to the public as part of the Takanawa Gateway City development. While the footbath is outdoors and subject to weather conditions, it currently serves as an accessible urban space for visitors near the Takanawa Gateway station.
Why it matters: The inclusion of free public amenities like the Ashiyu Terrace within a commercial development highlights a trend in urban planning that prioritizes accessible, non-commercial spaces. For international travelers and residents, particularly those from regions where public leisure infrastructure is scarce, these developments demonstrate how transit-adjacent hubs can integrate cultural and recreational utility into major metropolitan transit networks.
