The Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, Iwai Fumio, presented the 2026 Commendation of Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs to Mohamed Abdel Moneim El-Sawy on 27 October. The award ceremony, held at the ambassador’s residence in Cairo, recognized El-Sawy for his ongoing efforts to foster friendship between Japan and Egypt.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry initially announced the commendation on 1 October. The honor acknowledges individuals and groups that have made significant contributions to the promotion of international relations through various activities. El-Sawy, the founder and director of the Abdel Moneim El-Sawy Culturewheel, received the recognition for his work in introducing Japanese culture to Egyptian audiences.
Building Cultural Bridges
Since establishing the Culturewheel in 2003, El-Sawy has facilitated numerous cultural exchanges. These initiatives have been conducted in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Japanese Embassy in Cairo. The venue has served as a central hub for presenting Japanese traditions and contemporary culture to the Egyptian public.
Events hosted at the center include:
- Martial arts demonstrations
- Anime song performances
- Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) workshops
During the event, El-Sawy expressed gratitude for the recognition, citing it as a source of pride. He noted his admiration for Japan’s ability to maintain traditional values alongside technological progress. He also reiterated his intention to continue promoting stronger bilateral cultural ties.
The ceremony included notable attendees such as Egyptian judo athlete Mohamed Rashwan and Ayumi Hashimoto, the Director of the Japan Foundation’s Cairo office.
Why it matters:
This commendation highlights the role of private cultural institutions in strengthening diplomatic relations. By providing a consistent platform for Japanese arts and customs within Egypt, the Culturewheel has deepened mutual understanding between the two nations beyond official state-level interactions.
