Open-Source Contributions Propel Indian Engineer to Global Fintech Role

Indian software engineer Uzair Ali secured a founding engineer position at a San Francisco fintech startup by showcasing his work on public code repositories.

January 2022

While studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Ali posted a server‑log monitoring tool on X. The repository caught the eye of Dukaan’s chief technology officer, leading to a backend internship in Bengaluru.

2022‑2023

Ali completed additional internships at HackerRank and FamPay during his university years, building a portfolio of open‑source pull requests across projects such as LiteLLM, Terraform, Crossplane and IntelOwl.

2023

After graduating, he joined Civo, a London‑based cloud infrastructure provider, continuing to contribute to open‑source frameworks like Agno, which has amassed more than 42,000 stars on GitHub.

2024

Ali was hired by Flip Laboratories, a San Francisco fintech startup, as a founding engineer. He works remotely from India, citing his public code history as the primary factor that convinced the hiring team.

Current status

Ali remains a remote engineer at Flip Laboratories, leveraging his open‑source track record to influence product development and AI initiatives.

Why it matters: Ali’s experience illustrates how publicly visible code can replace traditional resume screening for engineers in India and the broader Middle East, offering a pathway to international roles without relocation.
