Tom Gabarró, a 19-year-old from Cabrera del Mar, Barcelona, is currently the only Spanish athlete enrolled in the NFL Academy. The program, which trains international talent, features a roster of 70 players representing 21 different nations.
Gabarró discovered the sport while participating in an academic exchange program in Canada. He stated that he initially chose the sport by process of elimination because he was unfamiliar with the other options available to him at the time. He maintains a long-term commitment to the sport, stating he plans to remain involved with American football throughout his life.
NFL Expansion in Spain
The presence of an academy player from Spain coincides with the league’s increased focus on the Spanish market. The NFL is scheduled to host its second game in Spain next week, featuring a matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Falcons at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
This event follows the league’s inaugural game in the country, held last year at the same venue. In that contest, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders with a final score of 16-13.
Program Background
The NFL Academy serves as a development pathway for international players, aiming to provide training and exposure to athletes outside the United States. By recruiting from diverse regions, the league seeks to identify talent capable of competing at higher levels of the sport.
Why it matters: The NFL’s continued investment in Spanish venues and the inclusion of international athletes like Gabarró underscore the league’s strategy to expand its fan base and talent pipeline into Europe. For international sports enthusiasts, these exhibition games and development programs represent the growing integration of American football into the global sports landscape.
