On the morning of March 19, club officials gathered in a quiet conference room at Tenerife’s headquarters, where they received the tragic news that Jesús de Miguel, the team’s 30-year-old striker, had died.
De Miguel, a Madrid native, suffered a severe impact during a league match against FC Andorra on March 18. The collision involved the Andorra goalkeeper and left the forward with injuries that proved fatal.
CD Tenerife confirmed the death at 9:35 a.m., stating that medical personnel had attended the incident on the field but could not save the player. The club released a brief statement acknowledging the loss and expressing condolences to the player’s family.
Teammates and coaching staff described de Miguel as a dedicated professional who had been with the club for several seasons. His sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of grief across the Spanish football community.
Andorra’s club issued its own statement, expressing sorrow over the incident and offering support to Tenerife. Both clubs have announced plans to observe a moment of silence before their next scheduled fixtures.
The Spanish Football Federation said it would review safety protocols following the incident. It has not yet indicated whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the goalkeeper involved.
Fans gathered outside Tenerife’s stadium to lay flowers and candles, honoring the forward’s memory. Local authorities have opened a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
As the season continues, Tenerife will need to adjust its attacking lineup without de Miguel, while the broader league watches how clubs respond to the tragedy.
Why it matters: The death of Jesús de Miguel highlights the risks football players face on the field and may prompt reviews of match safety standards in Spain and across the Middle East, where the sport is widely followed.
