Tokyo’s ‘Kabe Uranai’ Automated Fortune-Telling Wall Gains Popularity

A new automated fortune-telling installation, known as “Kabe Uranai,” has emerged in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, drawing attention on social media. The interactive wall dispenses fortune cards through a hidden mechanism, blending digital payment technology with traditional divination.

Key Takeaways

  • Location details: The installation is situated near Shibuya Station in the Miyamasuzaka area, adjacent to a steakhouse.
  • Payment process: The service costs 999 yen (approximately $6.30) and operates via digital payment methods, including credit cards, QR codes, and Suica cards.
  • Interactive experience: After payment, a section of the wall moves to reveal a compartment containing a pack of nine fortune cards.
  • Accessibility: The interface provides instructions in English, allowing international visitors to participate.
  • Future expansion: Developers plan to install additional Kabe Uranai units in Ikebukuro, Nagoya, and Osaka over the coming years.

How the System Operates

The Kabe Uranai unit appears as an unassuming section of a wall featuring an electrical box. This box houses the payment terminal. Once a user completes the transaction, the wall emits a mechanical sound, and a stone panel shifts to reveal the fortune cards. The cards are illuminated, and the panel returns to its original position after the user retrieves the items.

The fortune packs contain two instruction cards and seven randomly selected cards. These cards provide divination results and suggest specific locations for the user to visit within the surrounding area.

Expansion Plans

While currently localized in Shibuya, the operators have scheduled a rollout for other regions. A new unit is slated for Ikebukuro in November, followed by a Nagoya installation in December. A further location is planned for Osaka in 2027.

Why it matters: This development highlights the growing trend of integrating technology into urban exploration and tourism in Japan. It demonstrates how simple, interactive installations can create viral local interest, providing a model for businesses seeking to drive foot traffic to specific neighborhoods through experiential retail.
