Toyota Announces Two-Team, Six-Car Lineup for 2027 World Rally Championship

At a press briefing in Tokyo, Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled its plan to field two factory teams and six crews in the 2027 World Rally Championship (WRC). The Japanese automaker said the new entries will run the GR Celica Rally1 and the GR Yaris Rally1, models built to the top-tier Rally1 specifications.

Team structure and vehicle rollout

Toyota will split its effort between two distinct teams, each responsible for three rally crews. The company did not name the team operators, but confirmed that all six crews will compete with the newly developed GR Celica Rally1 and GR Yaris Rally1 cars. Both vehicles are designed to meet the FIA’s hybrid Rally1 regulations, combining internal‑combustion engines with electric power units.

Strategic goals and industry reaction

Company officials said the expanded programme aims to deepen Toyota’s involvement in the sport and to showcase its hybrid technology on a global stage. “We want to demonstrate the performance and sustainability of our rally cars,” a Toyota spokesperson told reporters.

Motorsport analysts noted that the move could intensify competition ahead of the 2027 season, which will see several manufacturers updating their line‑ups. “Toyota’s decision to run two teams signals a serious commitment to the WRC,” said a senior analyst at a European motorsport consultancy.

Fans and sponsors have welcomed the announcement, citing the brand’s recent successes in the championship. The GR Yaris Rally1 has already earned multiple podiums, while the GR Celica Rally1 is expected to debut later this year in testing.

Looking ahead, Toyota plans to begin preseason testing of both models in early 2026, with the first rally entries slated for the season opener in Monte Carlo. The company will also work with its partners to develop driver line‑ups and support staff for the expanded operation.

Why it matters: Toyota’s expanded WRC presence introduces new hybrid rally cars that could influence the adoption of greener technology in motorsport, a development of interest to Middle Eastern markets investing in sustainable automotive initiatives and to Egyptian fans following international racing trends.
