Developers in Mexico City have been marketing new residential complexes with names taken from the upscale Polanco district, even though the sites lie outside its boundaries.
Last five years
In the past five years, a series of high‑rise apartment towers have risen in a rapidly changing part of the capital. The projects feature manicured lawns, pristine commercial spaces and private security patrols.
Current appearance
A circular metal sculpture greets visitors at the Cuadrante Polanco complex, while two additional buildings are under construction across the street. Similar towers have appeared on the opposite side of the block during the same period.
Naming strategy
Despite the modern amenities, the developments are not located in the historic Polanco neighborhood. Real‑estate firms have adopted the Polanco name to evoke the prestige of the city’s most affluent area, which borders the new sites.
Situation today
The practice has created confusion for residents and visitors, highlighting a broader trend of developers using established district names to attract buyers, regardless of actual location.
