CIB Named to Fortune’s 2026 Change the World List for Economic Empowerment

Commercial International Bank (CIB) of Egypt has been named to Fortune’s 2026 Change the World list in the Economic Empowerment category. The designation marks the bank as the only financial institution from Africa and the Middle East to appear on this year’s ranking.

Recognition of Sustainable Financing

Fortune selected CIB for its work as a financial adviser on the issuance of EGP 7 billion in sustainable social sukuk. This financing instrument is designed to direct capital toward small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and broaden financial access for underserved demographics. The bank stated that the issuance serves to connect capital markets with the real economy, aiming to stimulate job creation, expand investment opportunities, and support sustainable development.

Hisham Ezz El-Arab, CIB’s chief executive officer and board member, noted that this is the second time the bank has appeared on the Fortune list. He stated the recognition highlights the institution’s commitment to using financial expertise to foster economic growth and improve financial inclusion.

Commitment to Economic Growth

CIB continues to prioritize initiatives that support SMEs, citing the vital role these businesses play in improving productivity and driving economic stability. By focusing on innovative financing solutions, the bank intends to continue directing funding toward sectors requiring support to generate measurable social and economic impact.

Why it matters: This inclusion highlights CIB’s role in advancing sustainable finance within the Middle East and Africa. By utilizing instruments like social sukuk to support SMEs, the bank demonstrates a model for how regional financial institutions can address capital gaps and stimulate local economic development in emerging markets.
