Tata Communications Announces $450 Million AI Network Investment in India

Tata Communications announced a $450 million investment on Monday to construct a high-speed fiber network across India. The project aims to link data centers designed for artificial intelligence workloads.

Phase One: Establishing Key Corridors

The initial stage of the infrastructure deployment focuses on connecting the Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai corridor. The company identified this route as a primary growth area for hyperscale data centers and artificial intelligence operations. The project involves laying approximately 10,000 kilometers of new long-haul fiber optic cable.

Subsequent Expansion Phases

Following the first phase, the company plans to extend the network to emerging data center hubs. Targeted locations include Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City. This expansion is intended to integrate with the company’s existing global network backbone to support the performance and scaling requirements of AI applications.

Future Connectivity Developments

The company previously expanded its Tata Global Network capabilities in June 2026 by planning a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore. Additionally, it is participating in a consortium to construct a subsea cable system connecting Chennai to Singapore, which is scheduled to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2029.

Current Status of Network Infrastructure

Tata Communications manages a network comprising over 500,000 kilometers of subsea fiber and more than 200,000 kilometers of terrestrial fiber. The firm projects the Indian data center connectivity market could exceed $1 billion in the medium term. MD and CEO Ganesh Lakshminarayanan stated that expansion efforts are currently supported by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand.
