Governor Hassan Abdalla of the Central Bank of Egypt met with European Investment Bank Vice‑President Gelsomina Vigliotti to discuss deepening bilateral ties and sustainable finance initiatives.
Meeting in Cairo
During Vigliotti’s visit to Egypt, Abdalla highlighted the strategic partnership between the CBE and the EIB, noting progress in the Egyptian economy and the soundness of its banking sector despite global and regional challenges.
Banking sector resilience
Vigliotti cited high capital adequacy ratios, strong liquidity and a low non‑performing loan ratio as evidence of the sector’s resilience. She praised the CBE’s role in supporting economic stability.
Focus on sustainability
Both officials reaffirmed commitment to expand cooperation in sustainability. They reviewed the Greening Financial Systems (GFS) programme, an EIB technical‑assistance project aimed at bolstering the CBE’s sustainable‑finance framework.
Future agreement
The CBE, which joined the GFS programme in July 2025, plans to activate it in the coming period. The two institutions are preparing a cooperation agreement that will include technical capacity‑building provisions.
Where the partnership stands
Egypt and the EU’s financing arm are set to formalise a new agreement that will strengthen technical support for sustainable finance, building on an existing strategic partnership.
Why it matters: Strengthening sustainable‑finance capacity can help Egypt attract green investment, support economic resilience and align with global climate goals, a priority for the region’s development strategies.
