Cognizant In Talks to Invest in AI Unicorn Sarvam at $4 Billion Valuation

Bengaluru-based AI startup Sarvam AI is negotiating a potential investment from Nasdaq-listed IT services provider Cognizant Technology Solutions. The proposed deal could value the Indian company between $3.5 billion and $4 billion, according to reports citing industry sources.

June 2026

Sarvam AI secured $234 million during the initial close of its $300 million Series B funding round. This milestone elevated the startup to unicorn status. The round was led by HCLTech with a $150 million investment, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Peak XV Partners.

October 2026

The startup continued its product expansion by launching Bulbul V4 Flash, a text-to-speech model designed for Indian languages. This followed the earlier releases of the Sarvam Vision 2.1 model and the Saaras V4 speech-to-text tool, which are tailored for local enterprise and government data requirements.

Current Status

Cognizant is reportedly discussing the acquisition of a minority stake as part of a $300 million capital raise. Sarvam has also engaged with large domestic enterprises to anchor this funding round. Neither company has confirmed the details of the ongoing discussions. Cognizant executives previously stated the firm is seeking acquisitions to transition its business model toward platform-based outcomes and generative AI capabilities. Sarvam, founded in 2023 by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, counts organizations such as the Life Insurance Corporation of India and SBI Life among its clients.

Why it matters:

This potential investment highlights a strategic shift within the global IT services sector, where traditional outsourcing firms are increasingly prioritizing AI infrastructure to remain competitive. As generative AI automates routine software development and back-office tasks, major service providers are seeking to integrate specialized, localized AI models—such as those developed by Sarvam—into their service portfolios to protect market share against automation-driven disruption.
