India Eyes Share of $3 Trillion Global AI Infrastructure Investment

India’s manufacturing sector stands to gain from a projected $3 trillion global investment cycle in artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to a report by investment banking firm Avendus Capital. The research identifies specific industrial segments, including defence, space technology, and semiconductors, as key areas where domestic firms can secure long-term growth.

Key Takeaways

  • Global AI spending: Approximately 80% of the $3 trillion allocated for global AI infrastructure remains unspent, presenting a significant opportunity for Indian manufacturers.
  • Critical growth period: Analysts expect 2027–2028 to serve as a pivotal window for commercializing projects as firms transition from policy planning to active production.
  • Semiconductor expansion: Domestic chip consumption is forecast to grow from $49.5 billion in 2025 to $106.5 billion by 2030.
  • Space economy: The Indian space sector is projected to expand from $13 billion in 2025 to $44 billion by 2033.
  • Strategic focus: Growth is supported by rising demand for energy infrastructure, geopolitical security concerns, and India’s existing engineering talent pool.

Industrial Growth Drivers

Avendus Capital highlights that India’s manufacturing potential relies on its ability to leverage domestic demand and engineering capabilities to reduce import reliance. The report notes that while the opportunity is substantial, success will depend on performance in select high-tech segments.

Koushik Bhattacharyya, Managing Director at Avendus Capital, stated that India’s right-to-win is concentrated in specific industrial verticals. Beyond semiconductors and space, the robotics market is expected to grow nearly fourfold to $4.6 billion by 2030. Meanwhile, defence production is projected to reach $31.6 billion within the same timeframe.
