Trail Race Turns Great Wall Segment into New Monument

A 24-kilometre trail competition held on Sunday transformed a section of the Jinshanling Great Wall into a race monument, echoing the prestige of cycling’s five classic one‑day races.

What happened

Runners entered the Jinshanling stretch from a side road and faced a steep kilometre of narrow steps flanked by vegetation. The ascent led to a row of ancient watchtowers built to repel Mongol invasions. From there, athletes descended sharp steps, navigated a smooth stone slide that taxed their quadriceps, and tackled a long climb among large blocks to the next tower before emerging into a souvenir‑filled exit.

Why it matters

Organisers aim to cement the route as a landmark event, comparable to the world’s most renowned one‑day cycling classics. The race showcases the Great Wall’s historic architecture while promoting ultra‑distance trail running in China.

Background

The Jinshanling sector is part of the Great Wall’s best‑preserved stretches, known for its watchtowers and rugged terrain. Trail running has grown in popularity across Asia, and the event seeks to blend cultural heritage with sport.

What comes next

Officials plan to repeat the 24‑kilometre course in future editions and explore additional wall sections for similar races. They also intend to enhance safety measures on the steep steps and stone slides.
