Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi announced the launch of the sixth African Union commemoration for post-conflict reconstruction and development. This year, the initiative expands from a single event to a full month of programming throughout November, marking 20 years since the adoption of the African Union’s Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy.
November 2024
President Al-Sisi, acting as the African Union’s champion for post-conflict reconstruction, declared the theme for the month as “Twenty Years of Building and Sustaining Peace: From Policy to Implementation.” In a formal statement, he urged African nations to move beyond viewing reconstruction as purely humanitarian or economic. Instead, he argued it must be integrated into the continent’s security architecture to address the root causes of instability.
Al-Sisi called for a comprehensive assessment of progress made over the last two decades. He emphasized the need to identify implementation gaps and prioritize projects that provide immediate, tangible benefits to affected populations. The president also urged increased financial support for the African Union Commission and the Cairo-based AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development.
Late November 2024
Egypt is scheduled to host the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development. The event serves as a platform to strengthen the connection between security and development, specifically targeting the implementation of the AU’s reconstruction policy. Al-Sisi highlighted that future efforts should prioritize national needs and involve broader participation from women, youth, and the private sector.
Current Status
The month-long initiative aligns with the African Union’s broader Agenda 2063 goals. As the continent approaches the African Union’s 25th anniversary in 2027, the focus remains on coordinating government, regional, and international efforts to foster stability and sustainable growth.
