Indian users are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their daily workflows, propelling the nation to become ChatGPT’s largest market globally by weekly active users. This growth marks a significant shift for OpenAI, which saw its local user base double since January 2026, according to the company’s India Managing Director, Prabhjeet Singh.
Expanding Infrastructure and Access
OpenAI is intensifying its focus on the Indian market through localized product development and infrastructure investment. The company, which established its first office in Delhi NCR in August 2025, plans to open additional locations in Mumbai and Bengaluru. To reach users beyond major urban centers, OpenAI is prioritizing Android-first development and expanding its language capabilities.
To support enterprise adoption, the company has partnered with TCS’ HyperVault for data center capacity, starting at 100 megawatts with the potential to scale to 1 gigawatt. This infrastructure aims to address local data residency and security requirements. Additionally, OpenAI models are available through AWS’ Amazon Bedrock, allowing for local inference to keep request processing within the country.
Enterprise Deployment and Future Plans
Enterprises, global capability centers, and startups are moving past pilot programs to full production deployments. Companies like JioHotstar and Cars24 are already utilizing the technology. Meanwhile, the developer community is expanding, with significant use reported in tier-II cities.
OpenAI is now engaging with government agencies and financial institutions to bolster cybersecurity against AI agent misuse. Singh stated that clear regulation is necessary to maintain confidence among users and developers. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce advertising on ChatGPT in India, partnering with Razorpay to facilitate brand campaigns while promising that user data will remain protected.
