The Spanish government on Tuesday approved a royal decree aimed at ending a two-decade delay in the implementation of digital radio. The new regulation establishes the framework to expand broadcasts using DAB+ technology, a standard that offers higher audio quality and additional service capabilities compared to traditional analog signals.
Key Developments in Digital Radio Transition
- Regulatory framework: The royal decree sets the conditions for the national rollout of DAB+ technology.
- Service improvements: Listeners will gain access to higher sound quality and new digital broadcast services.
- Operator obligations: The legislation mandates specific coverage requirements for radio operators broadcasting at the national level.
- European alignment: The measure attempts to align Spain with other European nations that have already transitioned away from reliance on frequency modulation (FM).
Ending a Long Delay
For over 20 years, the adoption of digital radio in Spain has lagged behind its European neighbors. While other countries began transitioning their broadcast infrastructure years ago, the Spanish market has remained dominated by frequency modulation (FM) signals. This new decree seeks to accelerate the transition process by formalizing the requirements for operators.
By mandating coverage standards, the government aims to create a more robust and uniform digital infrastructure across the country. The shift to DAB+ is intended to modernize the radio landscape, allowing broadcasters to provide enhanced content and clearer reception to audiences.
Why it matters: This regulatory move marks a significant shift in national media infrastructure. By finally codifying the transition to digital standards, Spain moves to modernize its communications sector, potentially influencing how information and entertainment are delivered to audiences across the region.
