Egypt and AngloGold Ashanti Plot Expanded Mining Partnership

When President Abdel Fattah Al‑Sisi met AngloGold Ashanti chief executive Alberto Calderón on the sidelines of the fifth Egypt Mining Forum, the conversation quickly turned to the faces behind the machines: Egyptian engineers, young technicians and the families of miners who depend on the Sukari gold mine for their livelihood.

Building on Sukari’s Success

Al‑Sisi praised the Sukari operation, noting that the government wants to broaden the relationship beyond the mine’s current output. The president outlined a vision that includes deeper exploration, technology transfer and the creation of local supply chains. In response, Calderón highlighted Egypt as a “priority investment destination” for AngloGold Ashanti and announced plans to pour additional capital into several promising sites, though he gave no figures or timetable.

Impact on Workers and the Economy

The proposed partnership would bring training programs for Egyptian workers, a boost to domestic suppliers and, according to the presidency, a pathway to new projects that could echo Sukari’s success. Ministers of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the talks, underscoring the state’s commitment to make mining a larger engine of growth.
