Rare Studio Ghibli Art Reveals Original Vision for Princess Mononoke

Early Concepts Shared

A newly published art collection reveals that Hayao Miyazaki originally conceived Princess Mononoke as a feudal-era retelling of Beauty and the Beast, featuring a protective cat samurai. The seventh volume of the Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Series, released by publisher Iwanami Shoten, includes 258 pieces of concept artwork, 90 of which have never been displayed publicly.

The 184-page book documents the transition from Miyazaki’s initial, more conventional narrative to the darker, complex film released in 1997. Early sketches depict a softer tone, contrasting significantly with the final version, which explores a violent territorial struggle between humans and forest entities.

Creative Evolution

Miyazaki began developing the original concept following his 1992 film Porco Rosso. He even published text and illustrations for this early version in a book released by Studio Ghibli parent company Tokuma Shoten in 1993. However, the director later abandoned the project’s initial direction.

According to the collection, Miyazaki grew dissatisfied with the story, viewing it as stale and old-fashioned. While working on the 1995 animated music video for the song “On Your Mark,” Miyazaki concluded that adhering to past creative limitations was incorrect. This realization prompted the shift toward the grittier, morally ambiguous story that audiences recognize today.

The release of these archives provides a comprehensive record of the creative process behind one of Studio Ghibli’s most influential films. It highlights how a director’s evolving perspective can fundamentally reshape a major artistic project.

Why it matters: This insight into Miyazaki’s creative process demonstrates the importance of critical revision in filmmaking. For creators, the shift from a conventional fairy-tale structure to a complex, character-driven narrative serves as a reminder that abandoning initial concepts can lead to more impactful storytelling.
