Portici di Carta Turns Turin into a Two‑Kilometre Open‑Air Library

On a bright Saturday morning, families strolled down Via Roma, their children clutching colorful paper books as if they were treasured toys. The streets of Turin had been transformed into a sprawling literary fair, a project called Portici di Carta that stretched over two kilometres of the city centre.

A Citywide Celebration of the Written Word

More than 71 independent bookstores and 56 publishing houses set up vibrant stalls, offering everything from classic novels to avant‑garde poetry. Over a hundred events—readings, workshops, and panel discussions—filled the air with the rustle of pages and the murmur of enthusiastic conversation.

Local author Martina Rossi, whose debut novel was featured at a pop‑up booth, said the atmosphere reminded her of a giant family gathering, where strangers become fellow readers. “Seeing so many people, young and old, discover a book they hadn’t planned to buy—it’s priceless,” she told a small crowd gathered around a storytelling corner.

Impact and Looking Ahead

Organisers reported that the fair attracted thousands of visitors, boosting sales for small retailers and sparking spontaneous literary clubs in neighbourhood cafés. City officials praised the event for revitalising public spaces and promoting cultural tourism.
