Berlin’s Housing Expropriation Talk Sends Real Estate Stocks Plummeting

Talk of seizing private homes in Berlin is shaking up the market.

  1. Die Linke, a post‑communist party, won the city’s regional election on a platform that promises to nationalise more than 200,000 rental units owned by large property groups.
  2. Although the party has not yet formed a government or taken any property, the mere prospect has already rattled investors.
  3. Shares of the biggest real‑estate firms active in Berlin have tumbled over 20% in the last quarter and are still down about 5% since the September 20 vote.
  4. The idea is echoing in Spain, where protesters chant “Expropriation, the solution,” but the policy is not on the official agenda yet.

The fear of forced takeovers is enough to dent stock prices, even before any law is passed.
