US and Iran Exchange Threats Ahead of UN General Assembly

The United States and Iran have signaled an extended period of hostility as officials prepare for the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Both nations issued warnings regarding potential military escalation while discussing diplomatic options.

What happened

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned on Monday that Iran would deploy new weapons and target previously untouched locations if the U.S. launches strikes. This followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated he is in a decision-making phase regarding three options: eliminating Iran, allowing its economy to collapse, or pursuing an agreement. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that all Iranian airlines will cease global operations on September 23.

Why it matters

The conflict has impacted global energy markets. Oil prices fell on Monday, with Brent crude dropping to $101.18 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate falling to $97.61. Vice President J.D. Vance stated the U.S. is working to protect naval forces enforcing a blockade, attributing rising petrol costs to the conflict.

The background

Tensions remain high as the U.S. maintains a naval presence in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the rhetoric, President Trump indicated openness to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the UN summit.
