Luis de Guindos, the former Spanish Economy Minister and current vice-president of the European Central Bank, recently shared his take on why renting a home in Spain has become so difficult. Speaking at a business conference in Madrid, he pointed to a significant demographic shift as a key driver behind the current housing squeeze.
De Guindos highlighted that Spain’s population has grown from 45 to 50 million people, largely due to an increase in immigration. He argued that this surge has created a massive spike in demand for rental properties. Unfortunately, because the supply of available homes hasn’t kept pace with this rapid growth, it has put intense pressure on both prices and availability for renters across the country.
