Yemen, once known as “Happy Arabia” for its ancient trading routes, is currently the center of a tense military standoff. Recently, Houthi forces reached the southern Red Sea coast and seized control of Mayyun Island. This strategic move puts them dangerously close to the Bab al-Mandab strait, a vital maritime crossing where roughly 12 percent of global trade flows daily.
While recent mediation by Oman led to promises that the Houthis would stop attacking international vessels, Saudi Arabia remains an exception to their ceasefire. This escalation has left the Yemeni government feeling vulnerable. Although President Trump spoke with President Rashad Al-Alimi to clarify that U.S. talks with the group don’t signal a shift in alliances, no new military support was promised.
