US and Iran Resume Talks After June Ceasefire Collapse

The United States and Iran held their first diplomatic talks since June, following the breakdown of a ceasefire that had been in place earlier that month.

June 2024 – Ceasefire collapses

In June, a ceasefire between the two sides fell apart, leading to intermittent exchanges of fire along the contested border. Both governments reported continued hostilities after the agreement unraveled.

Post‑June – Resumption of dialogue

Weeks after the ceasefire failure, U.S. and Iranian officials met for a preliminary discussion. The talks marked the first direct contact since the June collapse and were described by diplomats as a step toward de‑escalation.

Current status

Both parties said the meeting was constructive but emphasized that further negotiations are needed to achieve a lasting ceasefire. No concrete agreements were announced, and sporadic fighting was reported to continue in the area.
