Singapore Bus Operators Impose Fines for Loud Music and Other Disruptive Behaviour

Singapore transport authorities announced on Tuesday that passengers caught playing loud music on public buses will face fines of up to S$500, part of a broader crackdown on disruptive conduct.

The Land Transport Authority said the new penalties, effective from 1 October, also cover eating on board, placing feet on seats and other actions that disturb fellow commuters. Violators will be issued on-the-spot infringement notices, with repeat offenders subject to higher fines.

Enforcement details

Bus drivers and onboard staff are instructed to report incidents to the LTA’s enforcement team. Officers will assess each case and issue fines ranging from S$200 to S$500, depending on the severity of the disturbance. The LTA emphasized that the measures aim to improve the commuting experience and maintain public order.

Background

The move follows a series of complaints lodged by commuters over the past year about noise and inappropriate behaviour on buses. Earlier this year, the LTA launched a public awareness campaign urging riders to respect shared spaces. The new fines complement existing rules that already prohibit smoking and littering on public transport.

Transport operators will monitor compliance and provide regular updates to the public. The LTA said it will review the impact of the fines after six months and consider further actions if needed.
